IN THIS LESSON

Discover the town Mitchelville, in South Carolina the first free African American Community in the US.

Mitchelville was established in late 1862 on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, during the American Civil War as the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved African Americans in the United States. Its creation was part of the larger Port Royal Experiment, an effort by Union forces to demonstrate that formerly enslaved people could become self-sufficient citizens when granted land, resources, and freedom to govern themselves.
